The Broad Institute Associate Director, EHS Biosafety Officer will manage the Broad’s biosafety program, including the biosafety program for Broad’s BSL3 laboratory. DIRECTOR & BIOSAFETY OFFICER, Research Compliance, Research Safety, Boston University, Boston, MA
The Boston University (BU) Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Office provides leadership in safety, technical guidance, emergency response support, training, and compliance for all laboratories at Boston University (BU) and Boston Medical Center (BMC). This position serves as a Biological Safety Officer (BSO)/ Associate Director. The BSO/ Associate Director reports and works with the Research Safety Director to ensure activities related to the use of biological materials including recombinant and synthetic DNA in laboratories are performed safely and in compliance with applicable regulations, standards, policies and procedures, and best practices. The BSO/ Associate Director develops and implements policies and procedures, tools, and guidance to help ensure the safety, stewardship and compliance in the use of biological materials and laboratory safety. The Biosafety Officer is responsible for supporting the implementation of the Harvard University Biosafety and Laboratory Safety Programs at the Cambridge and Allston campuses in Cambridge and Boston, Massachusetts. This position is under the supervision of the Director of Laboratory Safety & Biosafety and will perform duties in Biosafety and Laboratory Safety in a multi-disciplinary Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) environment with strong emphasis on research laboratory safety (biological and chemical safety, occupational safety & health, industrial hygiene and radiation protection). The primary purpose of this position is to provide services directly to the clients through field consultations, technical assistance, inspections, training, protocol review, data collection and analysis. This position also provides emergency response support on a team rotation basis. As a member of the EH&S team, this person works together with the Laboratory Safety staff to assist with the development of university-wide biosafety and lab safety programs.

The Biological Safety Officer works under the general direction of the Director of Environmental Health and Safety, and is responsible to promote biosafety programs in compliance with the various published laws, regulatory agencies and standards impacting biological safety in the work place; coordinates the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) and actively participates on relevant University committees (such as Animal Care Committee (ACC)), Institutional Review Board (IRB and IBC) and serves as a permanent member as required; consults with principal investigators on biosafety issues and advises on compliance issues; develops and provides training to groups within UCHC such as researchers, CLAC staff, graduate students, users of select agents, etc.; keeps community informed on issues supporting biosafety; serves as a consultant to researchers and advises on issues of assessing and controlling biohazards, design and management of facilities involved in hazardous experimentation, federal permits issues involving shipping and receipt of hazardous biological materials, etc.; reviews and/or oversees the review or writing of safety protocols; conducts health and safety inspections/audits of facilities/labs to evaluate compliance status, prepares written reports on findings and conducts follow-up activities to ensure that deficiencies are corrected; coordinates the registration of UCHC laboratories involving Biological Safety Level (BSL)-2 and BSL-3; designs and coordinates the development and implementation of computer systems to streamline compliance activities for researchers; responds to researchers’ requests for assistance involving indoor air quality, hazardous materials, spills and other issues; serves as the liaison to internal departments and outside agencies; and writes assurance letters to granting institutions; maintains a level of professional knowledge current with new developments in biological safety; performs other related duties as required.
