NEBSA Scholarship Awards

NEBSA intends to give two types of annual awards:

1. an academic scholarship to one or more individuals enrolled as a student in a bachelor's, master's, or doctoral program in biosafety, occupational safety, industrial hygiene, biology, health sciences, or related field at a college or university.

2. a biosafety training scholarship to one or more individuals with an educational background in science, engineering or health who are interested in moving into the field of biosafety.


Each award shall consist of the following:

  • Academic Scholarship:  Monetary support of $2000 during one academic year to the recipient for educational expenses, to be paid $1000.00 at the beginning of each semester.  
OR
  • Biosafety Training Scholarship: Monetary support of up to $2000 to reimburse for registration fees to attend a multi-day comprehensive biosafety training course such as ABSA's Principles and Practices of Biosafety course.  Receipts and proof of attendance will need to be submitted for reimbursement.
AND (for both types of scholarship)
  • Complimentary registration at the ABSA International Biosafety and Biosecurity Conference and the NEBSA Symposium during the year of the award.
  • Nominal monetary support (up to $1000) to reimburse the recipient for expenses to attend these events, to cover travel, lodging, meals, or incidentals.  Receipts and proof of attendance will need to be submitted for reimbursement.

Timeline

The scholarship application period is from March 1st to May 15th every year.  No applications or supporting materials will be accepted after May 15th.   Award recipient(s) will be notified and announced on the NEBSA website by June 15.  2023 winner is Mary Nilsen.

Eligibility Requirements

Academic Scholarship Applicants must:

  • Be enrolled as a student in a bachelor's, master's, or doctoral program in biosafety, occupational safety, industrial hygiene, biology, health sciences, or related field at an accredited college or university.
  • Have a 3.0 undergraduate GPA and (if applicable) a 3.5 graduate GPA.
  • Reside in, or attend school in, one of the six New England states
  • Preference will be given to qualified candidates who have not previously won the award.

Biosafety Training Scholarship Applicants must:

  • Have an educational background in a science, engineering or health field.
  • Be interested in moving into the field of biosafety.
  • Reside in, or work in, one of the six New England states
  • Not have previously won the award.


Application Requirements and Procedure - Academic Scholarship

All applications are reviewed by the NEBSA Board.   Applicants are required to complete and submit the online application form, available here: NEBSA Academic Scholarship Application Form.

In addition, applicants must submit:

  • A resume or CV showing their full educational and work experience
  • Transcripts from every university they have attended or, for undergraduate students entering their freshman year, a high school transcript
  • Proof of GPA
  • An academic letter of recommendation

These materials must be emailed to contact@ne-bsa.org and must be received by May 15th of the application year.  Questions about the scholarship process may be emailed to the same address.

NEBSA reserves the right to interview any and all applicants, and to choose not to award the scholarship in any given year.

  • Two letters of recommendation from professional colleagues or mentors

These materials must be emailed to contact@ne-bsa.org and must be received by May 15th of the application year.  Questions about the scholarship process may be emailed to the same address.
